The Heart Team at Arkansas Children's Hospital performed 299 open-heart procedures during calendar year 2006, setting a record for the hospital. The unprecedented number of cases is a 62 percent increase from the 185 open-heart procedures conducted at Children's in 2005. A surgical procedure referenced as an open-heart procedure includes heart transplants and any procedure that requires use of a heart/ lung bypass machine.

In recent years, Children's invested in technology known as the DeBakey VAD Child, a device that helps prolong and increase the quality of life for children awaiting a heart transplant. The hospital also has repeatedly used a miniature heart pump known as the Berlin Heart for the same purpose. The use of both devices is rare in pediatric hospitals in the U.S. and such technology Heart Team Sets Hospital Record for Open Heart Proceduress contributed to the Heart Center's reputation as a leader in pediatric care.
