LITTLE ROCK - Orthopaedic sports medicine specialist Chase Smith, MD, has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

He is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedics in the UAMS College of Medicine.

Smith graduated magna cum laude from Auburn University in 2004 and earned his medical degree from UAMS in 2010. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and a sports medicine fellowship in July at Andrews Sports Medicine Institute, where he worked with world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon James Andrews, MD, and participated in the care of professional, college and high school athletes.

At the Andrews Institute, he specialized in arthroscopy and treatment of sports-related injuries, as well as open and arthroscopic treatment of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee.

In addition, he completed extra training to treat cartilage injuries in the knee with articular cartilage implantation and meniscal transplantation. Other interests include rodeo-related injuries as he is a member of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association and Arkansas Rodeo Association and actively competes in steer wrestling.

He has completed research on bicep tenodesis in pitchers, and the effects of self-adherent wrap on range of motion.

Smith is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
